When Napoleon Bonaparte Lilly, Jr. and his twin brother Samuel S. were born on May 22, 1886, in Camp Creek, West Virginia, their father, Napoleon, was 31, and their mother, Iowa, was 27. He had four brothers and four sisters. He enlisted in the Army on April 31, 1914. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company A, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on December 26, 1918 and is now buried in American Legion Cemetery, Beckley, Raleigh County, West Virginia, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Wildwood Cemetery, Beckley, Raleigh County, West Virginia, USA.
