Roy Wayland Smith was born on July 26, 1893 in Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan. He was the son of Frank O. Smith and Phebe L. Robinson Smith. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Cook in Ambulance Company No. 3, 1st Sanitary Trains, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on October 1, 1918 in France at the age of 25 and is now buried in Woodland Cemetery, Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan, USA.
