When John Klopfenstein was born on April 25, 1896, in Berne, Indiana, his father, John, was 35 and his mother, Catharine, was 25. He had three brothers and three sisters. He entered the service on September 19, 1917. He was sent to Camp Custer, Mich. and was assigned to Company D, 328th Machine Gun Battalion. He was transferred to Camp Merritt, N. J. and went overseas where he was transferred to Company C, 18th Infantry, 1st Division. He was Killed in action on September 12, 1918 and is now buried in St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Vigneulles, France but his surname is inscribed as Klopenstein.
