When Edward L. "Ed" Heuer was born on July 29, 1895, in Cook, Illinois, his father, Edward, was 33 and his mother, Emilie, was 26. He had two brothers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company G, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action in 1918 and is now buried in Eden Memorial Park, Schiller Park, Cook County, Illinois, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Vigneulles, France but his surname is inscribed as Hener.
