When Ira Lee Cater was born on September 21, 1898, in Posey, Indiana, his father, Oscar, was 28 and his mother, Cordelia, was 25. He had two brothers and two sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company A, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 16, 1918 in France at the age of 20 and is now buried in Odd Fellows Memorial Park and Mausoleum, Tumwater, Thurston County, Washington, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in St. Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Carter.
