John Henry Bates was born on July 4, 1886 in London, City of London, Greater London, England. He was the son of George Henry Bates and Harriet Bates. He entered the military service in Pennsylvania and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company L, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 15, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. A memorial marker is also dedicated near his parents, George and Harriet (Church) Bates, in Prospect Cemetery, Cambria County, PA.
