Claude was the son of Posey and Josephine Potter Earl. He entered the service on September 18, 1918, in Montana; he was assigned to Company L, 109 Infantry, 28th Division. He was deployed overseas and was attached to the First Infantry Division. He died from wounds received in action on October 2, 1918.

His World War I draft registration card describes him to be tall and lean with light blue eyes. It also states he is missing the third finger of his left hand. At the time he registered for the draft, he is shown to be a ranch hand in Fox, Montana.
