LOCKE, ARTHUR FRANKLIN (Captain) was born in Sastons River, Vermont, Oct. 31, 1879, the son of Foster B. Locke and Louise Newcomb. He was a citizen and voter of Hartford, Conn. He married Clara E. Dose at Hartford, Conn. Oct. 1, 1906. He was a member of the National Guard for seventeen years. He received his education in the Vermont University. He came to Hartford in 1901 and enlisted in the Hartford City Guard, or Company F, of the old First Regiment. When the old First and Second Regiments were merged into the 102nd Regiment, Captain Locke was given command of Company M, composed mostly of Winsted and Torrington men. He trained at Yale Camp, New Haven. He left New Haven with the Third Battalion on the morning of September 15, 1917, and sailed from Halifax Sept. 16, 1917, for Liverpool, Eng. and proceeded from Southampton to Certerlieux, Dept. of Boges, France; from there to Chemin des Dames and then to Seicheprey, Toul Sector. He first went into action at Chemin des Dames. He participated in a gas attack Mar. 17-18 and Battle of Seicheprey April 20, 1918. Captain Locke met his death April 20, 1918, calmly fighting, though outnumbered ten to one. He had the honor of being the first New England captain to lead his men into the first line trenches in action. He is now buried at St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. He also has cenotaphs located in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury, Fairfield County, Connecticut and Saxtons River Cemetery, Saxtons River, Windham County, Vermont.
