Rodney J. Chase entered the military service in New York. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Sergeant in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He formed part of an assault platoon storming Omaha Beach in the first wave, at 6.40 am, under the guns of a German strong point. All the officers in his company had been wounded or killed by noon of June 6, 1944. Sgt. Chase was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for “exemplary behavior in action against the enemy.” He is now buried in Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.
