Gale G. Lapham was born on October 29, 1908. He was a veteran of the North African and Sicilian invasions and serve in the First Division. On January 28, 1943, then a sergeant, Lt. Lapham distinguished himself near Djebel Haifa, Tunisia. Ordered to abandon a position where he and his men had been protecting the withdrawal of a rifle company. Lt. Lapham seized a 30-calibre machine gun and personally put three German machine gun nests out of action. For this act he was awarded the Silver Star. Soon afterward he was promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and went with the First to Sicily where again he saw violent action. When the Sicilian campaign was completed the division was sent to England where they took special training preparatory to the invasion. He came shore on Omaha Beach on June 6th. He was promoted to First Lieutenant. Gale was Killed in Action on June 14, 1944 at the age of 35 and is now buried in Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, Suffolk County, New York, USA.
