Arthur J. Mello was born in 1919. He enlisted in the Army on February 24, 1941 in Rhode Island. Arthur served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on June 6, 1944 during the invasion on Omaha Beach, France. Initially listed as missing in action, unrecoverable or unidentifiable, the remains of PVT Mello were recovered in 1959 and identified in 1961. His remains were repatriated to the U.S. for permanent interment. His name is permanently inscribed on the Walls of the Missing at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-sur-Mer/St. Laurent-sur-Mer, France.
