Billy Shultz Thorpe was born on August 11, 1922 in Ridgeley, Mineral County, West Virginia. He was the son of Benton C. Thorpe & Edna Margaret (Shultz) Melnick. He enlisted in the Army on December 11, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was noted as being employed in the manufacture of textiles and also as Single, without dependents. Billy served as a Private First Class, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II. He resided in Allegany County, Maryland prior to the war. Billy was "Killed In Action" during the war in the Normandy invasion on June 7, 1944 at the age of 21 and is now buried in Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.
