From Valley Stream, New York. Copilot of the B-26 Maurader serial number 42-96101 4T-N "My Aching Back" which took off from Holmsley in the UK to hit the bridge over the Oise river at L'Isle Adam north of Paris. The plane's right engine took a direct hit from enemy flak, engulfing the bomber's wing in flames. Although the B-26 was severely damaged, the pilots were able to maintain the lead and complete the bombing run. The pilot, Captain Lindsey, then held the plane level until his crew, including LT Erbe, was able to bail out safely. Before Captain Lindsey was able to bail out, his Bomber exploded and crashed in the poplars after Lime Tree Avenue in St Prix, France. CPT Lindsey was awarded the Medal of Honor for this action. LT Erbe escaped and survived the war. He retired to Florida and died in Apopka on 10 October 2000. His cremated remains have been interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
