Sgt. Pinto entered the service on April 13, 1942, and received his basic training at Fort Belvoir, Va., and Indiantown Gap, Pa., leaving there for overseas duty in August of the same year. He completed his basic training in England and from there left for Scotland, where he waited for the invasion of North Africa. Sergeant Pinto served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He participated in the North African campaign and on completing this mission he joined in the invasion of Sicily and later returned to England. After a short time in England he participated in the invasion of France. He was in the first wave to strike shore on the Normandy beachhead. From there his outfit went through France striking into Belgium and later into Germany. He was Killed in Action in Belgium when his outfit went back to Belgium but was declared "Missing" on January 1, 1945 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial, Neuville-en-Condroz, Arrondissement de Liège, Liège, Belgium.
