William Henry Lang was born on October 21, 1922 in Winona County, Minnesota. He was the son of Herbert Henry Lang and Erna Anna Fiedler Lang. William graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1940. After two years of study at Winona State Teachers College he entered the University of Minnesota where he remained until his induction. Sergeant Lang was inducted into service on April 28, 1943, and received his basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in field artillery. He was transferred to Fort George G. Mead, Maryland, in August 1943, and remained there until September 1944, when he was transferred to the Infantry and sent to Camp Carson, Colorado, for further training. He went overseas the latter part of November 1944, and received his sergeant's rating upon his arrival in Belgium in January 1945. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on January 30, 1945 in Belgium at the age of 22 and is now buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, Winona County, Minnesota, USA.
