Pvt. Gossage as born and reared in Springfield, attending Sand Hill school. Before entering the army in March 1944, he was employed by the city's department of streets and public improvement. He received his training as an infantryman at Little Rock, Ark., and Washington, D. C., and was sent overseas the first of November, 1944 with the First Army. He died from his wounds received in battle on December 22, 1944 in Belgium at the age of 35 and is now buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, USA.
