Charles Dennis Cook was born on November 22, 1961 in Beaufort, Beaufort County, South Carolina. He was the son of Charles F. Cook and Mary Alice Burchfield Cook. Charles was a 1979 graduate of Davie County High School and one year at Davidson Community College, Lexington. He joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1978 and entered boot camp in 1979 following high school graduation. He received a commendation in 1989 for outstanding performance as a communicator with the 34th Marine Amphibious Unit on his first overseas duty while serving with the 2nd Marine Division. Charles was killed in the terrorist bombing of the United States Marine barracks. In the early morning hours of 23 Oct. 1983, a truck loaded with explosives crashed through the security perimeter of the USMC Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. In the explosion that followed, 241 US Military personnel were killed and 80 serious wounded. His current burial place is unknown.
