James Albert Austin was born January 2, 1922. He graduated from Greene High School in 1938, and worked for Maxson Cleaners until the time of his enlistment. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps February 25, 1942, and was honorably discharged in November of the same year. He accepted appointment as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Corps reserve two days after his discharge and reported for duty the same day.

Lieutenant Austin died August 25, 1943, from injuries received in an airplane crash which he was a Pilot at Kunming, China, while serving as a member of the 425th Bombardment Squadron. He is now buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, Butler County, Iowa, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
