Olin Woodrow Bales, aged 26, was born on May 8, 1918 in Virginia. He was a graduate of Thurmont High School, class of 1935, and had been in service for some time. Bales served in the Air Corps as a Captain during World War II. He has been stationed at a 20th Bomber Command base in India and has been in action frequently as Navigator on one of the B29 superfortresses of the command. He was Killed in Action on August 2, 1944 at the age of 26 and is now buried in a common grave with his crew in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA and listed on a group headstone. He also has a cenotaph located in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland, USA.

Bales was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
