Alex Baran was born in 1919 in New York. He entered the military service in Connecticut and served in the 45th Bomber Squadron, 40th Bomber Group, Very Heavy as a Master Sergeant. Baran was one of twelve airmen lost when US Army Air Corps B-29 Superfortress #42-6261 "Stockett's Rocket" disappeared on mission to Japan, over the "Hump" (China-India border region). He was a passenger aboard the aircraft. He was declared "Missing in Action" on June 15, 1944 and is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.

Baran was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China but his death date is inscribed as 1944-6-15.
