Carl R. Barnes, aged 27, was born on December 1, 1917. He entered the military service in California. He served in the 444th Bombardment Group as a Major. He was killed when U.S. Army Air Corps B-29-5-BW Superfortress #42-6262 "Round Trip Ticket", which he was a Pilot, was shot down by enemy fighter over Mukden, Manchuria. Ten other airmen also perished. He is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA.

Maj. Barnes was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China but his middle name initial is inscribed as L.
