Walter Bernert was born on July 6, 1906. He served in the 11th Bomber Squadron, 341st Bomber Group, Medium as a Staff Sergeant and Gunner of an aircraft during World War II. He died on October 9, 1943 at the age of 37 and is now buried in the Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, Suffolk County, New York, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
