Thomas W. Bircher was born on October 14, 1923 in Hyde Park, Dutchess County, New York. He was the son of Herbert Bircher and Anna M. Shook Bircher. Thomas served in the 1330th Base Unit as a First Lieutenant. He was a Pilot in the Army Air Force. His was killed when his plane went down somewhere in the India-China area. He died on August 17, 1944 at the age of 20 and is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York.

Thomas was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China but death date is inscribed as 1944-08-16.
