Paul Ellsworth Bitner was born on March 27, 1916 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He resided in Texas prior to the war. Paul served as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot on B-24D (#42-40930), 425th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Paul was "Killed In Action" when their B-24 was shot down and crashed in China during the war.

Paul was originally interred in Schofield Barracks Mausoleum #2, Hawaii and was later repatriated to Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA in a common grave with his crew. He also has a cenotaph located in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
