John Lee Cain was born on December 24, 1922 in Oklahoma. He was the son of Carl J. Cain and Zell Cain. He finished his Senior High School in Springfield and entered State College in 1940. After a year, he took up commercial flying at the Springfield Flying Service. He was later in the Air Transport Command and in September 1943, joined the Air Force. He was sent to India to fly "The Hump" and made a hundred ir more flights from India to China carrying supplies before he fell. The last flight was made on March 31, 1945 and he was killed in the crash of a C-40 near, Chabua, India. He is now buried in the Springfield National Cemetery, Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, USA.

Cain was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
