Thomas Geary “Geary” Caldwell, aged 25, was born on May 8, 1918 in Georgia. After finishing high school in Thomasville he attended Young Harris Jr. College and later received his A.B. degree at the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He volunteered for the Air Corps in December, 1941, and in January, 1942, he began training for the Air Corps. Dec. 13, he received his commission as Second Lieutenant in the American Air Transport Command. He left for overseas Feb. 22, 1943, and was promoted to First Lieutenant on August 3, 1943.

1Lt. Thomas was declared "Missing in Action" on September 15, 1943 in an Asian area and is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph located in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Thomasville, Thomas County, Georgia, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
