James Lyle Cunningham was born on November 12, 1917 in Kansas. He was the son of Maurice James Cunningham and Alta V. Bogue Cunningham. He served in the 373rd Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. James died on January 15, 1944 at the age of 26 in Myanmar and is now buried in the Braman Cemetery, Braman, Kay County, Oklahoma, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
