Joseph L. Franklin was born on June 4, 1920. He served in the 341st Bomber Group, Medium as a First Lieutenant and Navigator of an aircraft during World War II. On 20 June 1945, Lt James C, Carey was piloting 11th Bomb Squadron B-25J #43-27807 on a mission to attack and destroy multiple bridges in IndoChina (Vietnam). 1LT Franklin and his brother was his Co-Pilot. In the course of performing a low-level bomb run, the aircraft appeared to go out of control and crash near the target, a railroad bridge at Quang Tri, IndoChina. He was Killed in Action and is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA.

Joseph was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
