On November 22, 1944, he was sent overseas and served in the China-Burma-India theatre as the first pilot of a C-47 troop carrier until he died on May 26, 1945 as a result of injuries he received when his parachute didn't open as he was bailing out of his crippled plane. He was buried near Kunming, China with four other Americans. His remains were returned to New Bremen on February 8, 1949 and re-interred in German Protestant Cemetery on February 12, 1949.
