Carrol David Gregory was born on April 11, 1918 in Webster County, Kentucky. He was the son of Richard Louis Gregory and Dew Drop Brooks Gregory. He served in the 1342nd Army Air Force Base Unit as a Major and Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. He was the commanding officer of the Air Transport Command in Yunnan Province of China. He went down with his plane on February 7, 1945 and was declared missing. Major Gregory chose to stay with his crippled C-47 trying to save 35 Chinese troops on board. He and co-pilot Second Lieutenant Ralph Young died with their passengers, but two crew members bailed out successfully. His name is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph located in Pythian Ridge Cemetery, Sturgis, Union County, Kentucky.
Maj. Carrol was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
