Claudius Hammond was born on August 2, 1916. He served in the 1330th Army Air Force Base Unit as a First Lieutenant and Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. Claudius died on March 5, 1945 at the age of 28 and is now buried in the Manalapan Presbyterian Cemetery, Manalapan, Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
