Howard D. Hamrick was born on December 5, 1926 in Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois. He served in the US Air Corps as a Private and Assistant Engineer of an aircraft during World War II. He was killed at Hain-Ching, China and was flying "the Hump" during the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations. He is now buried in the Fon du Lac Township Cemetery, East Peoria, Tazewell County, Illinois, USA. Howard was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
