Joseph B. Hewitt, Jr. was born in 1919 in Pennsylvania. S/Sgt. Hewitt was one of 34 Army personnel killed when C-46A Commando transport #42-107386 developed engine fires after departing Chabua, India on a flight for Karachi and crashed on a jungle ridgetop. Only one passenger survived when he was thrown clear of the burning wreckage. Local villagers rescued him and built a landing strip in the jungle for a small airplane to land. Most of the passengers aboard were members of the 22nd Bomb Squadron and were homeward bound. He is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA in a common grave with others.

Joseph was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
