Francis H. Iles was born on July 10, 1924. He served in the 769th Bomber Squadron, 462nd Bomber Group, Very Heavy as a Staff Sergeant and Tail Gunner of an aircraft during World War II. He perished when U.S. Army Air Corps B-29-5-BW Superfortress #42-6263 ditched off in Kurmitola, India. 3 crew were killed but 8 survived and were rescued. He is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA. Francis was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
