Jack Terry Irwin was born on November 4, 1917 in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri. He came to Phoenix with his parents from Joplin, Mo., in 1935 and entered Phoenix College. In 1940 he entered the services receiving his primary flight training at Ryan Field, Tucson. He received his wings in May, 1941, and was assigned to a fighter group. He flew P-40s with the famed Assam Dragons, 25th Fighter Squadron, China-India-Burma Theater, from January 1942, until his death. CPT Irwin was pilot of a bomber which smashed at the Japanese in Burma. He is now buried in the Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA.

He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
