Donald Edward Jennings was born October 6, 1915, in LeMars and attended the LeMars public school, graduating from the LeMars high school with the class of 1934. Following his graduation he worked as a painter. He entered the service in December, 1942, and received his training at Scott Field, Illinois. He had been stationed in Reno, Nevada, and Florida, but after his furlough in August, 1944, he was sent overseas and stationed in India.

Donald was a radio operator on a transport plane and had been killed in a plane crash on December 25, 1944 in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Donald is now buried in the Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars, Plymouth County, Iowa, USA.

He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China but death date is inscribed as 1944-12-24.
