LaVern J. Keller was born on January 22, 1921 in Idaho Falls, Bonneville County, Idaho. LaVern enlisted June 2, 1942 in the army, taking his basic training for plane mechanics at Sheppard Field, Tex., and advanced training at Santa Monica, Calif. LaVern served in the 1327th Army Air Force Base Unit, Air Transport Command as a Corporal and Crew Chief of an aircraft during World War II. He died over the Himalaya Mountains "The Hump" in India on September 10, 1944 from injuries received in an airplane take off crash. He is now buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Idaho Falls, Bonneville County, Idaho, USA.

LaVern was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China but death date is inscribed as 1944-09-09.
