Clyde Leonard Lowery was born on September 28, 1922 in Hartleyville, Athens County, Ohio. He was the son of Leonard Lowery and Cora Mae Van Dyke Lowery. PFC Lowery was the Radio Operator aboard United States Army Air Corps E-87 Liberator Express #43-30556, a tanker freighter version of a B-24 bomber. His aircraft exploded in flight after departing Tezpur, India on a gasoline ferrying flight to Kumming, China. All four aboard perished. The remains of the aircraft and crew have never been located. His name is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph located in Beech Grove Church Cemetery, Shawnee, Perry County, Ohio.

Clyde was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
