David Miles Lustig was born on August 22, 1916. He was a graduate of Lawrenceville School in 1935 and of Princeton in 1939, Lieutenant Lustig was commissioned in May, 1941, and was made a First Lieutenant in August, 1943, at San Marcos Army Air Field, Tex., where he was assistant echelon commander. Based in India with the Twentieth Bomber Command, he received the Air Medal on Nov. 6.

David served with the 45th Bombardment Squadron, 40th Bombardment Group, Very Heavy as a Navigator of an aircraft during World War II. On 19 December, a crew made up of members of four different crews with Bob Moss as A/C, flew mission #8 to Omura in aircraft #738. Upon return to Hsinching from that mission, they received instructions to fly aircraft #331 from Hsinching to Chakulia the following day. At 5:15 p.m., they took off for India. At night, over Burma, they were shot down by a British Beaufighter. All on board except navigator David Lustig survived the shoot down.

David is now buried in the Temple Israel Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson, Westchester County, New York, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
