Michael Stephen Manning was born on February 13, 1915 in New York. He resided at 307 Knickerbocker Avenue, Rochester, Monroe County, New York prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 6, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents. Michael served as a First Lieutenant and Navigator on B-24M #44-42114, 373rd Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Michael was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 crashed 12 miles southeast of Luliang, China during the war. He is now buried in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rochester, Monroe County, New York, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
