Robert E. Mannning was born on August 10, 1921. He served in the 425th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Second Lieutenant and Bombardier of an aircraft during World War II. Robert died on August 25, 1943 at the age of 22 and is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Milton Cemetery, Milton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.

Robert was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
