William V. McCarthy, Jr. was born on July 5, 1919. He served in the 444th Bombardment Group as a Second Lieutenant and Navigator of an aircraft during World War II. 2nd Lieutenant McCarthy was killed when U.S. Army Air Corps B-29-5-BW Superfortress #42-6262, nicknamed "Round Trip Ticket" was shot down by enemy fighter over Mukden, Manchuria. Ten other airmen also perished. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
