Troy Herbert McCubbin was born on September 17, 1920 in Miller County, Missouri. He was the son of Virgil Albert McCubbin and Mae Mary Catron. He had two sisters, Helen Gertrude and Doris May. He was married to Betty J Mead McCubbin Mason and together they had a daughter, Michal Ann.

Troy was a pilot of a B-24J aircraft during World War II. B-24J #42-73305 'Rose of Juarez' of the 308th Bomb Group, 375th Bomb Squadron, crashed at the end of the runway at Chengkung upon takeoff on a bombing mission 13 July 1944. After the initial crash, the bombs began to explode. This was the first of two accidents that day on the same runway.

He is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA. Troy was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
