Marshall Robert McNickle was born on October 7, 1918. He was the son of Miles J. McNickle and Blanche M. Labrie McNickle. He entered the service on April 13, 1942, and was attached to a bomber squadron, the 491st Bomber Squadron, 341st Bomber Group. He went overseas on September 24, 1943, and was stationed in the India-Burma theater. Marshall was killed in flight over India on March 30, 1944. He is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Saint Bernard Cemetery, Redfield, Spink County, South Dakota.

Marshall was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
