Daniel Lester Mengel was born on January 19, 1919 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Lester Daniel Mengel and Ella Iona Ramer Mengel. He served in the 27th Troop Carrier Squadron as a Master Sergeant and Crew Chief of an aircraft during World War II. Daniel died on September 23, 1944 at the age of 25 in China and is now buried in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
