Wendell Guy Mettert was born on February 28, 1915 in Ohio. He served in the 374th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Staff Sergeant. He was an Assistant Engineer on the B-24J # 42-73329 aircraft during World War II. He died on December 24, 1943 at the age of 28 and is now buried in the Maumee Cemetery, Antwerp, Paulding County, Ohio, USA. Ssgt Mettert was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
