Evert Port Mitchell was born on February 17, 1922 in Bayfield, La Plata County, Colorado. He was the son of Elmer Mitchell and Sophronia E. Milligin Mitchell. He served in the 425th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot of a B-24 liberator bomber during World War II. It departed from Southwest, China but was lost in a combat mission to Hongkong. His name is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph located in Bayfield Cemetery, Bayfield, La Plata County, Colorado.

Evert was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
