Max Montague Nichols, Jr. was born on September 18, 1918 in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. He was the son of Max Montague Nichols and Mary Gordon McGlohon Nichols. Max served in the 373rd Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on December 1, 1943 when his plane was shot down while on a mission over Rangoon, Myanmar and is now buried in the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA in a common grave with his crew.

1Lt Nichols was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
