Evan Wilkins Norwood was born on June 21, 1921 in Goldsboro Township, Wayne County, North Carolina. He was the son of Evan Wilkins Norwood and Emma Wilson Norwood. Evan served in the 396th Air Service Squadron as a Sergeant during World War II. He died on January 25, 1944 at the age of 22 and is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA. He was a passenger of an aircraft at the time of his death.

Sgt Norwood was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
