Leland Stanford O'Reilly, Jr. was born on November 4, 1921 in Mississippi County, Missouri. He was the son of Leland Stanford O'Reilly and Elsie Voelker O'Reilly. He attended the public schools here and later was graduated from the high school. He joined the National Guard in 1940 and after that enlisted in the aviation branch of the Army. Lieut. O'Reilly received his wings and commission in October, 1942, at Lubbock, Tex., and went overseas in May, 1943. He was a pilot of the 11th Combat Cargo squadron engaged in flying the Hump of the Asiatic area. He was reported as missing in action on Sept. 1, 1944. He is now buried in the IOOF Cemetery, Charleston, Mississippi County, Missouri, USA.

2Lt O'Reilly was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
